It took about 3 days to dig 47 meters. In such a situation, according to experts, it may take another 6-7 days to reach the bottom after drilling from above. That too when the drilling does not stop and there is nothing in the debris that could cause damage to the machine. A top official of the central agency involved in the rescue operation said, ‘The breakage of the shaft of the auger machine which was drilling is a setback. Shaft means that part of the machine, which rotates the rock cutting blades located in front. Earlier on the night of 22nd November, iron mesh, rebar and other such metallic bodies had come in front of the auger machine, due to which the blades of the machine got damaged and the shaft got stuck.

International tunnel expert Arnold Dix, who came from Australia, said, ‘The auger machine has broken down, now we will have to consider other options also. We are looking at how to evacuate 41 people safely. If you hurry, you may face problems.

Arnold said, ‘Now there are only other options left, due to which the rescue may drag on. All the workers are safe, they are being given food, water and medicines. We will now focus on manual mining.
